My name is Paul Kassens – I am from Seattle Washington USA, and I’m living in the Philippines to be with my honey. I am in my mid 50’s and I met my fiance online. After 3 years of chatting nightly online, and a visit in 2009, I decided I just could not wait to get her Visa to the USA, or even the thought of making another visit only to return home way too soon.
So I condensed my junk as much as possible and put it in storage, arranged to store my trailer, sold my car, and flew to the Philippines. My fiance, Amor had found a modest apartment in her home town of Panabo City. After keeping her eyes & ears open for about a year, an apartment became vacant in the building next door to her cousin’s house, so I told her to grab it – and then she began to gather furnishings while I was busily preparing to make my move to join her.
Having lived in the Seattle area nearly all of my life, this was indeed a big move for me… not only moving to a different country, but to also find ways to be able to keep paying the bills while living abroad. The adjustments have been a somewhat overwhelming experience, as well as an enlightening and educational one – but I am thoroughly enjoying it!
This blog is my attempt to chronicle some of my experiences and challenges with adjusting to life in the Philippines, but to also attempt to provide insights and information to others who may either be curious or those also contemplating or planning to make a similar jump themselves.
I also plan to provide photos and information that will show what life is like here in the Philippines, in addition to serving as a bit of a travel and cultural guide as well.
So jump on board, hang on tight, and enjoy the ride!
